THE TOP SECRET ABOUT ENDHIRAN

Come July 31st and we would get to hear the Endhiran songs! The audio launch function, which will have a host of celebrities attending it, will take place at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
So which audio company managed to lap up the audio rights of this biggie? Well, that is kept a well-guarded secret till now. However, sources report that audio rights have been sold for a whopping Rs. 7 crores, a sum that has not been paid for any of the films’ audio rights so far.
This leads us to believe that AR Rahman has scored some wonderful songs that would soon turn out to be chartbusters.

Mayan king’s tomb discovered in Guatemala

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — A well-preserved tomb of an ancient Mayan king has been discovered in Guatemala by a team of archaeologists led by Brown University’s Stephen Houston. The tomb is packed with of carvings, ceramics, textiles, and the bones of six children, who may have been sacrificed at the time of the king’s death.
The team uncovered the tomb, which dates from about 350 to 400 A.D., beneath the El Diablo pyramid in the city of El Zotz in May. The news was made public yesterday during a press conference in Guatemala City, hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which authorized the work.
Before making the actual discovery, Houston said the team thought “something odd” was happening in the deposit they were digging. They knew a small temple had been built in front of a sprawling structure dedicated to the sun god, an emblem of Maya rulership. “When we sunk a pit into the small chamber of the temple, we hit almost immediately a series of ‘caches’ — blood-red bowls containing human fingers and teeth, all wrapped in some kind of organic substance that left an impression in the plaster. We then dug through layer after layer of flat stones, alternating with mud, which probably is what kept the tomb so intact and airtight.”
Then on May 29, 2010, Houston was with a worker who came to a final earthen layer. “I told him to remove it, and then, a flat stone. We’d been using a small stick to probe for cavities. And, on this try, the stick went in, and in, and in. After chipping away at the stone, I saw nothing but a small hole leading into darkness.”
They lowered a bare light bulb into the hole, and suddenly Houston saw “an explosion of color in all directions — reds, greens, yellows.” It was a royal tomb filled with organics Houston says he’d never seen before: pieces of wood, textiles, thin layers of painted stucco, cord.
“When we opened the tomb, I poked my head in and there was still, to my astonishment, a smell of putrification and a chill that went to my bones,” Houston said. “The chamber had been so well sealed, for over 1600 years, that no air and little water had entered.”
The tomb itself is about 6 feet high, 12 feet long, and four feet wide. “I can lie down comfortably in it,” Houston said, “although I wouldn’t want to stay there.”
It appears the tomb held an adult male, but the bone analyst, Andrew Scherer, assistant professor of anthropology at Brown, has not yet confirmed the finding. So far, it seems likely that there are six children in the tomb, some with whole bodies and probably two solely with skulls.
And who was this man? Though the findings are still very new, the group believes the tomb is likely from a king they only know about from other hieroglyphic texts — one of Houston’s specialties in Maya archaeology. “These items are artistic riches, extraordinarily preserved from a key time in Maya history,” said Houston. “From the tomb’s position, time, richness, and repeated constructions atop the tomb, we believe this is very likely the founder of a dynasty.”
Houston says the tomb shows that the ruler is going into the tomb as a ritual dancer. He has all the attributes of this role, including many small ‘bells’ of shell with, probably, dog canines as clappers. There is a chance too, that his body, which rested on a raised bier that collapsed to the floor, had an elaborate headdress with small glyphs on them. One of his hands may have held a sacrificial blade.”
The stone expert on site, Zachary Hruby, suspects the blade was used for cutting and grinding through bone or some other hard material. Its surface seems to be covered with red organic residue. Though the substance still needs to be tested, “it doesn’t take too much imagination to think that this is blood,” Houston said.
“We still have a great deal of work to do,” Houston said. “Remember, we’ve only been out of the field for a few weeks and we’re still catching our breath after a very difficult, technical excavation. Royal tombs are hugely dense with information and require years of study to understand. No other deposits come close.”
Houston, a 2008 MacArthur fellow, is the Dupee Family Professor of Social Science and professor of anthropology at Brown.
Houston’s co-director of the site is Edwin Román. He is working with a group of Brown graduate students and researchers, including Thomas Garrison, a former postdoctoral fellow at the Joukowsky Institute and the Department of Anthropology, and graduate students Sarah Newman, Nick Carter, James Doyle, Alex Knodell, and Alex Smith. Scherer, the bone analyst, is working with graduate student Kate Blankenship and undergraduate Morgan Ritter-Armour on the laboratory portion of the analysis.

AJITH’S NEXT PROJECT

While the rumor mills are working overtime predicting Ajith’s next project, we do not want to be left behind. Here we bring you what we heard in that front, for your sheer reading pleasure. It’s old news that the alleged Venkat Prabhu - Ajith project is titled Mangatha, but it’s also being said that the combination is likely to change. After all Anushka is expected to play Ajith’s lead in this film. It’s also reported that Mohanbabu’s son Manoj Manchu and Nagarjuna might play significant roles. The movie’s kick off with pooja will be held after the Tamil month of Aadi is over. Dayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine will produce this one and superstar Rajinikanth is expected to attend the grand launch event

VELAYUDHAM KICK STARTS IN STYLE

The pooja and kick off event of Vijay’s Velayudham, held today, was as much as a family event as it was a fan event. Fans from 30 districts in Tamil Nadu thronged the Madras University Centenary Hall in Chepauk to get a glimpse of Vijay and to participate in the commencement of the movie. The dais saw the Velayudham team present with their families: Vijay, Jeyam Raja, Aaskar Sridhar attended the event with their spouses along with S A Chandrasekhar, Shoba Chandrasekhar, Editor Mohan, Vijay Anthony, Genelia and Hansika Motwani.
The event started after a baton that travelled across Tamil Nadu and brought to the event by fans, was handed over to Vijay. At 10.05, the auspicious time, Pooja was held and a bound script was handed by Sridhar, S A Chandrasekhar and Editor Mohan to Vijay. A teaser trailer, shot during the photo sessions, was also shown to the hollering fans. A title song of sorts, composed by Vijay Anthony, was played time and again during the event making the fans scream their lungs out.
Hansika and Genelia were the first ones to speak at the event, who said that they are happy to associate with the team. After which Vijay Anthony addressed the audience, who also revealed that he was bowled over by the story even as it was narrated to him by Jeyam Raja. “I realized the edge-of-the-seat experience when I heard the story,” he said. He assured that the movie would be a runaway hit in 2011 and it would be an out and out entertainer with all commercial ingredients thrown in.
An ecstatic Raja said it is the happiest day in his life. “I’m lucky to have associated with producer Aascar Ravichandran. I’m happy that the chief guests for this event are the fans. They are the judges and I assure them that Velayudham would be the best movie in Vijay’s career,” he declared. A book, titled Saadanai Naayaganin Sarithira Padivugal, written by Vijay’s PRO for more than a decade P T Selvakumar was also released at the event. This book traces the life of Vijay from his childhood days to Velayudham and includes photos and snippets collected from various points of his life.
Vijay was all praise for producer Aascar Ravichandran and revealed that it was Ravi’s idea to have fans participate in the pooja of Velayudham. “My films usually do not have grand launch events. However, Aascar wanted it to be so but I was skeptical about it. I told him not to bring any international stars like Jackie Chan like he did for Dasavatharam launch. That is when he suggested this idea to include fans in the launch,” he said. “I am glad to have done this since I’m where I’m because of my fans,” he stated emotionally. He went on to assure that the movie would be a good entertainer and appealed his fans to support the movie like they do for his other movies.
On a lighter note, about the heroines, he said that Hansika Motwani is like Kushboo from 16 Vayadinile. On Genelia, he stated that they share a rapport since he knows her owing to their earlier association.
All the fans, who were selected to attend the event, received a gift hamper with a Velayudham Tshirt. They were also served with Biriyani and refreshments to go along with it.

Indian rupee to have a distinct symbol

New Delhi, July 15 (PTI) The Indian rupee will have its own symbol, a mix of the Devanagri ''Ra'' and Roman ''R'', to become the fifth currency in the world to have a distinct identity. The new symbol, designed by IIT post-graduate D Uday Kumar was approved by the Union Cabinet today.
The rupee will join the elite club of US dollar, British pound-sterling, Euro and Japanese yen to have its own symbol. The symbol will be printed or embossed on currency notes or coins, Information and Broadcasting Minister told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
Kumar''s entry was chosen from among 3,000 designs competing for the currency symbol. He will get an award of Rs 2.5 lakhs.
She said the government will try that the symbol is adopted within six months in the country and globally within 18 to 24 months. The symbol will feature on computer key boards and softwares so that it can be printed and displayed in electronic and print, she said.
Soni said it would also help in distinguishing the Indian currency from rupee or rupiah of countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Nissan Micra: Road Test And Review

micra_600
A very intriguing vehicle. That’s how I would describe the Nissan Micra. This bubbly car has a quirky design inside and out like a bunch of soap bubbles stuck together, and some say you can’t call it a men’s car. But Micra was designed to woo a unisex crowd and it looks stylish and elegant, all set to face the ongoing tough competition in the B-segment. Built on a new versatile V-platform, Micra is designed to offer a broad appeal to customers in both emerging and developed markets.
Well, after months-long wait, I finally got my hands on this tiny car. Although it looks tiny, there’s incredible room inside than the exterior of the car suggests, thanks to its longer wheelbase and a ‘wheels-at-each-corner’ stance. The boot space and leg space for the back seats are also commendable, however, rear seats are flat and lack thigh support, which is something Nissan needs to re-look at.
Micra is a package of many ‘firsts’ in this segment of cars. The top variant comes with keyless entry and push start/stop button, which is an exciting feature with the next car being the Chevrolet Cruze to sport this function. Approaching the car with a handful of shopping bags and opening the doors without having to fumble for the key is great. All you need to do is keep ‘the intelligent key fob’ in your pocket, get inside, and press the start button; Micra growls into life. Interesting! It’s technology that works. Another attractive feature is the wing-mirrors that automatically folds and unfolds when you lock and unlock the car.
Nissan seems to have been increasingly concerned about the safety of Indian drivers. Micra is again the first car in the segment to feature SRS airbags on ALL models, but only on driver’s side on the lower variants. However, the question is, will a middle class customer be able to afford the high price of replacing the inflated airbag? Let’s expect Nissan to come up with a competitive price for replacing airbags as well.
Inside, the ‘twin-bubble’ dashboard benefits from micro grain technology, which reduces the plasticky feeling. The interior of Micra looks more rounded and pleasing to eyes, with a round cluster of buttons on the central console, round AC vents, round speedometer and round steering boss. Overall, the interior quality is pretty good.

Driving Experience
The Nissan Micra is powered by an 1198cc three-cylinder motor that develops a maximum power of 75bhp at a whooping 6,000 rpm. Three-cylinder engines are infamous for idle vibration but guess what, Nissan has come up with a unique technology (oval rotation of the crank pulley) which has considerably cut down idling vibration. Moreover, the Indian version has been tweaked for optimum fuel efficiency and lesser emissions. The result is evident – an Automotive Research Association of India backed figure of 18 kmpl!
Nissan Micra is the perfect car for city driving I’d say. The third gear offers a wide enough power band that makes driving in dense traffic child’s play. With a small turning radius of just 4.65m and excellent visibility, city driving becomes a pleasure. However, the gear shifting is slightly jagged, which is definitely not expected from Nissan.
On a straight line Micra is a champion and is surprisingly stable even at 150km/h, thanks to good aerodynamics realised by the uniquely shaped cabin with a slightly raised roof end. The compact suspension built for the V-platform absorbs plenty of punishment handed out by our roads although there is some amount of body roll. Although acceleration is not swift, its braking and cornering capabilities and steering responsiveness are praiseworthy.
Micra is not just another car in the B-segment. It is a good blend of practical design and a handful of new unique features and seamless technology ingeniously packed.  It has managed to live up to the reliability that you expect form a brand like Nissan. Prices for the car are not yet finalised and we need to wait until July 14 for that. However, rumour has it that the estimated price is Rs 4.00 lakh for the base XE model, Rs 4.75 lakh for the XL, and Rs 5.25 lakh for the top-end XV variant. If competitively priced, Nissan Micra is going to be a game changer in the days to come.

Indian Ocean sea-level rise threatens coastal areas

Indian Ocean sea levels are rising unevenly and threatening residents in some densely populated coastal areas and islands, a new study concludes.
The study, led by scientists at the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo., finds that the sea-level rise is at least partly a result of climate change.
Sea-level rise is particularly high along the coastlines of the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, as well as the islands of Sri Lanka, Sumatra and Java, the authors found.
The rise–which may aggravate monsoon flooding in Bangladesh and India–could have future impacts on both regional and global climate.
The key player in the process is the Indo-Pacific warm pool, an enormous, bathtub-shaped area spanning a huge area of the tropical oceans stretching from the east coast of Africa west to the International Date Line in the Pacific.
The warm pool has heated by about 1 degree Fahrenheit, or 0.5 degrees Celsius, in the past 50 years, primarily because of human-generated emissions in greenhouses gases.
“Our results from this study imply that if future anthropogenic warming effects in the Indo-Pacific warm pool dominate natural variability, mid-ocean islands such as the Mascarenhas Archipelago, coasts of Indonesia, Sumatra and the north Indian Ocean may experience significantly more sea-level rise than the global average,” says scientist Weiqing Han of CU and lead author of a paper published this week in the journal Nature Geoscience.
While several areas in the Indian Ocean region are experiencing sea-level rise, sea level is lowering in other areas. The study indicated that the Seychelles Islands and Zanzibar off Tanzania’s coastline show the largest sea level drop.
“Global sea-level patterns are not geographically uniform,” says NCAR scientist Gerald Meehl, a co-author of the paper. “Sea-level rise in some areas correlates with sea-level fall in other areas.”
Funding for the research came from the National Science Foundation (NSF), NCAR’s sponsor, as well as the Department of Energy and NASA.
“This work is a step forward towards getting improved estimates of sea-level changes in one of the most heavily populated regions of the globe,” says Eric Itsweire, director of NSF’s physical oceanography program.
“Quantifying the heat and fresh water balance, as well as the large-scale circulation changes, in the Indo-Pacific warm pool through the use of observations and numerical models is crucial to understanding the subtle sea-level changes occurring in that region,” Itsweire says.
The patterns of sea-level change are driven by the combined enhancement of two primary atmospheric wind patterns known as the Hadley circulation and the Walker circulation.
The Hadley circulation in the Indian Ocean is dominated by air currents rising above strongly heated tropical waters near the equator and flowing poleward at upper levels, then sinking to the ocean in the subtropics and causing surface air to flow back toward the equator.
The Indian Ocean’s Walker circulation causes air to rise and flow westward at upper levels, sink to the surface and then flow eastward back toward the Indo-Pacific warm pool.
“The combined enhancement of the Hadley and Walker circulation form a distinct surface wind pattern that drives specific sea-level patterns,” Han says.
In their paper, the authors write that “our new results show that human-caused changes of atmospheric and oceanic circulation over the Indian Ocean region–which have not been studied previously–are the major cause for the regional variability of sea-level change.”
The study indicates that in order to anticipate global sea-level change, researchers also need to know the specifics of regional sea-level changes.
“It is important for us to understand the regional changes of the sea level, which will have effects on coastal and island regions,” says NCAR scientist Aixue Hu.
The research team used several sophisticated ocean and climate models for the study, including the Parallel Ocean Program–the ocean component of the widely used Community Climate System Model, which is supported by NCAR and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
In addition, the team used a wind-driven, linear ocean model for the study.
The complex circulation patterns in the Indian Ocean may also affect precipitation by forcing even more atmospheric air down to the surface in Indian Ocean subtropical regions than normal, Han speculates.
“This may favor a weakening of atmospheric convection in subtropics, which may increase rainfall in the eastern tropical regions of the Indian Ocean and drought in the western equatorial Indian Ocean region, including east Africa,” Han says.

New airport terminal ready by Aug 2011

R Sarabeswar, Chairman and CEO of Consolidated Construction Consortium said on Tuesday that the new domestic and international terminal buildings being constructed at the Chennai airport will be completed by August 2011. He said that the work was progressing at a brisk pace.
.
The Airports Authority of India had fenced the entire area except the portion housing a building, which was still under the defence authorities, therefore it would not affect the construction work at the terminal building said R Sarabeswar.

NO MORE VIJAY FILMS IN THEATRES?

VijayIn an extraordinary general body meeting held by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association yesterday, it was decided that the theatre owners would not extend support to any of the Vijay films until he compensates for the losses incurred by them for screening Kuruvi, Vettaikaran, Azhagiya Thamizh Magan, Villu and Sura. All these films did not do well as expected and hence the theatres suffered huge losses.

Earlier, they had demanded that Vijay pay back 35 percent of the amount. This was brought to the actor’s notice and he had said that he would announce a compensation package soon but failed to do so.

Following this, the Theatre Owners have decided that they would not screen Vijay films.

Consumer Reports will not recommend Apple iPhone 4

Consumer Reports said it cannot recommend Apple's iPhone 4 to buyers after tests confirmed the device's well-publicized reception glitches.
It added that that AT&T Inc, the exclusive mobile phone carrier for the iPhone 4, was not necessarily the main culprit.
The influential nonprofit organization, which publishes guides on everything from cars to TVs, said in a report released on Monday that it also tested other phones -- including the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre -- and found none had the signal-loss problems of Apple's latest iPhone.
The report was the latest blow to the iPhone 4, which sold 1.7 million units in its first three days on the market but has been plagued by complaints of poor reception. Many of the complaints involve a wraparound antenna whose signal strength is said to be affected if touched in a certain way.
Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu said he was surprised by the stance that Consumer Reports took on the new iPhone. Wu noted that the group's recommendations are used as a guide by many consumers.
"Consumer reports is a respected publication. This could have an impact on iPhone sales," Wu said.
Apple shares were down 1 percent at $257.06 on Monday afternoon on the Nasdaq.
The company has been sued by iPhone customers in at least three complaints related to antenna problems.
"When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side -- an easy thing, especially for lefties -- the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal," contributor Mike Gikas said in a report on the Consumer Reports website.
"Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4's signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that 'mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength,'" Gikas said.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
Gikas recommended covering the gap in the wraparound antenna with duct tape or some other non-conductive material.
Apple has said almost any cellphone will suffer a loss of signal if held in certain ways. It said later it had discovered a software glitch that overstates signal strength, though it did not directly address concerns about the antenna with that admission.
On the flip side, Consumer Reports said the iPhone scored high on other testing grounds such as battery life, sharp display and high-quality video camera.
However, Gikas said the signal problem was the reason the iPhone 4 would not be classified as a "recommended" device in its smartphone ratings.
"Apple needs to come out with a permanent -- and free -- fix to the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone4," said Gikas in his blog post on ConsumerReports.org

Ferrari in India

ferrari “Ferrari doesn’t sell really a car, it sells a dream.”
Let it be the launch of the world’s cheapest car or the acquisition of JLR, Ratan Tata never stops to amuse us; and this time, by bringing the iconic Ferrari to India.
BSMotoring reports that Ferrari is looking to open its first dealership in India in the next six to eight months and is likely to appoint Tata Motors or a sub-division of it as its sole Indian distributor and dealer. With Tata-Fiat joint venture in full swing in India and Fiat being the parent company of Ferrari, the move appears to be practical and convenient.
Speaking to BBC News, Ferrari Chairman Luca Di Montezemolo said that he is looking at opening a dealership here in India this year itself, although that might be a little premature. Ferrari is planning to open two dealerships in two of the largest metros in India, New Delhi and Mumbai with the latter most likely to be the first one.
Ferrari manufactures road-going sportscars, supercars and grand tourers and sells in excess of 6500 units a year. Its model lineup includes the California, 458 Italia, the 599 GTB and the 612 Scaglietti. “In the future we will sell a Ferrari with four-wheel drive but we will never sell a family Ferrari,” Mr Montezemolo states

Its Nice to Hear Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Ananthapurathu Veedu Review

Naga, the director of television serials like Marmadesam, Vidadhu Karuppu, Chidambara Ragasiyam, begins his silver screen directorial debut with Ananthapurathu Veedu under the prestigious S Pictures of director Shankar. In Kollywood, S Pictures have become synonymous with quality productions and this has naturally upped the expectations quotient along with
Ananthapurathu Veedu
Naga’s reputation on the subject. For his directorial debut, the director has chosen to tread on the path that he has quite often ridden in his television assignments and which are his comfort zones.

AV revolves around an ancestral house in Ananthapuram, which has remained uninhabited for several years owing to the sudden demise of a couple in an accident. Their son Bala (Nandha), who is running his own leather business in Chennai, comes to the property after 15 years with his wife Revathy (Chaya Singh) and his small boy Ananth (Aryan). Very soon, unexplained incidents happen in the house which makes Revathy, a claustrophobic, wanting to get out of the house. However, Bala does not believe in her and dismisses the events as sheer coincidences. It was their son Ananth, a speech impaired child who discovers the abnormal activities around the house but unable to comprehend and convey.

The factor in which AV stands out is the spirits are well meaning ones and are that of Bala’s parents. They always help the inmates of the house. At a time when films dealing with paranormal activity or supernatural powers are all evil ones and sends Goosebumps or shiver down your spine, AV comes as a fresh whiff of air and within twenty minutes of the film, the audiences are relaxed that they are not going to be subjected to some creepy ride. Nevertheless at this juncture, the director places a mysterious situation involving the hero and his business partner Jeeva who comes to the town to discuss a financial problem with Bala. Revathy comes to know that her husband is in serious mess in his business and that they are stuck at the house unless Bala returns money that he has borrowed from a few people. The answers to questions like whether Bala was able to return the money and if so how, what do the spirits do and who is the actual culprit in his misadventure are found in the rest of AV.

It was initially surprising to see a U certificate for a horror flick. But as the film unfolds, the reasons become lucid. Naga must be credited with giving a clean family flick in his debut vehicle. The moment we realize the spirits are good ones, we start enjoying their antics. The sequences where the spirits take care of cooking to cleaning to healing are enjoyable and women would certainly want to lease such kind of spirits to help them in their daily chores.

The kid Aryan is a revelation, reminds a lot of young version of Sachin Tendulkar. With his unruly curly mane and apt expressions, he captivates the hearts. Chaya Singh appears in Kollywood after Vallamai Thaaraayo and is adequate. However, it was Nanda who misses many a chance to prove his acting prowess. He remains contrived mostly. Kalaivani, as the governess of the house, is decent. Nandha’s friend Jeeva who was seen in K Balachander’s serial Sahana has delivered it right.

Technically, AV cannot boast much because there is not much scope for it and the team has also not attempted for it. Cinematography by Arun Mani Palani is in sync with the theme and there are just two songs and music scored by Ramesh Krishna does not stay in the minds. Most of the film is shot within the house and CG work is just average.

Although AV has a couple of pluses to its credit, it lacks in pace and there is an uneven keel to it. The narration does not engage the audience which is much needed for a film like this. AV does not scare you at all and is right for people wanting a relaxed family fare.

Madharasapattinam review

Get ready to be transported back into Madras. The makers have promised a trip from Chennai to Madharasapattinam and that is exactly what has been delivered through this movie. But, is it just a trip back in time or is there more to look forward to? Before we begin analyzing Madharasapattinam for what it is, let us lay down
Madharasapattinam
lines that quite clearly define what it is not. Any movie set in the pre-independence era carries the expectations of portraying the freedom struggle. Madharasapattinam makes little or no attempts to get into that. Yes, the events of the freedom struggle and subsequent achievement of independence from British rule are important events that have a bearing on the story. But, those events have not been shown in detail, nor have any of the legendary names associated with the freedom been depicted. So, Madharasapattinam is not a documentation of the freedom struggle and events associated with it. Then what is it?

It is a love story set against the backdrop of India that is on the verge of independence. A young British lady (Amy Jackson) is visiting India. She is from a family that is well connected to the highest echelons of power in the Madras presidency. As it is, tensions are brewing between the British and Indians all over the country. That rubs off on a small washer man community in Madras who stand in the way of the powerful British personnel when they attempt to evict them from their place. It hurts the ego of a highly placed British officer who challenges a young dhobi (Arya) for a one-on-one which would decide the fate of the place. The British lady happens to be a silent spectator to all that transpires between the British and the dhobi community; she notices the young man who has the courage to stand up to a mighty force. Soon, she finds herself attracted to this man who also seems to be reciprocating those feelings. But, the proximity between the two does not escape the eyes of the power hierarchy who look down upon the relation as a disgrace to the family and the empire. With freedom fast approaching and the British getting ready to leave the country, time is running out for the couple who have to make a decision between love and country. What happens to the love story that faces the wrath of mighty empire whose ego has been badly bruised by the freedom struggle? Watch Madharasapattinam to find out.

The storyline and the events might sound a bit familiar to you. Yes, there are points in the movie where one is able to draw parallels to other great movies. The opening portions remind us of Titanic, while the challenge thrown by the British at the dhobi community gives us a Lagaan feel. But, in spite of all this, Madharasapattinam has a unique identity and the reason for that is in the title of the film itself - Madras. That is the single biggest highlight of the movie.

Full marks to the team of Madharasapattinam for recreating Madras, which existed only in photos, history books and minds of people who lived during that era. Though most of us do not have a very clear idea about how Madras would have looked like before 1947, the picturisation is good enough to convince us that this is an authentic representation. First on the order of merit for making this possible is the art department headed by Selva Kumar. We are taken to a Mount Road (not Anna Salai) that is not overflowing with traffic, the old Washermanpet, the haloed building of the Madras Central and the Buckingham Canal which once was the backbone of a very efficient drainage system of the city. We are even shown a Cooum that is not filthy; which is hard to imagine, considering the state of the river these days. All sets are exquisitely constructed and look very original. Hordes of junior artistes have been employed in proper period attire to add to the authentic feel. What is provided by the art department in terms of magnificent sets has been enhanced into a wonderful on screen experience through Nirav Shah’s lens. The cinematographer is in top form capturing Madras in all its glory. The tone adopted to give a period theme is apt.

Other technical aspects of Madharasapattianam also a delight, especially G.V. Prakash’s background music. The small touches that he has provided, especially when the love between the lead couple begins to bloom, are wonderful. The songs too are a treat, especially ‘Vaama Dorayamma’ and ‘Aaruyire’. Though there is a feeling that adding a few western pieces here and there would have made it even more perfect for the movie. Costumes of the entire cast are almost perfect, especially Amy Jackson’s.

Performances are a real delight in Madharasapattinam. The one who walks away with the top honors is Amy Jackson for a beautiful portrayal of a lady torn between her love and the mighty empire. She looks absolutely beautiful, emotes well through her expressive eyes and is able to earn the sympathy of the audiences during tough times. Arya is perfect for the character of the dhobi who is also a wrestler. He is intense, manly, yet soft and romantic when it is required. A convincing performance. The rest of the cast too is spot on in delivering the goods. The British cast looks convincing as the colonial power. VMC Haneefa delights as the dubashi (translator) lending many moments of fun as he plays around with languages that he does not know. Nasser brings power and intensity to the character that he portrays. The lady who portrays the aged Amy Jackson, through whose memory the story is told, also impresses a great deal

While there are positives aplenty for Madharasapattinam, there are one or two aspects that could have been better. The dialogues do not seem to be the kind that would have been spoken before 1947, the lines look very contemporary, especially the Tamil dialogues. One can overlook this in a commercial film. Using the proper 1940s Madras Tamil could have worked either way for the movie. There are quite a few English dialogues (understandably), but they do not look like an inconvenience or act as a barrier between the film and the audiences; the subtitles have been done well.

Overall, Madharasapattinam is a film that takes you back in time and shows you a Madras that exists only in photos and memory. Hats off to the entire team for making this possible and kudos to Vijay for heading this team and pulling off the huge task. Also thanks to AGS Films for taking up such a subject which would have definitely cost a lot. Madharasapattinam is a pretty often seen love story where poor boy meets rich girl, much to the angst of the family. But, it is the backdrop and the treatment that make it a different experience. Watch Madharasapattinam for some great art work, cinematography, performances and to appreciate an effort that is a rare occurrence in Tamil cinema. But, do not look for a documentation of the freedom struggle and other historical milestones. Just enjoy the trip from Chennai to Madharasapattinam
